Part one is a research report relating to the practical applications of radioactivity
You are required to write a short, academic report which explains the physical mechanisms of nuclear fission and nuclear fusion, and demonstrates your understanding of the technical challenges of using each of these in a Nuclear Power Station to safely generate electricity.
You will need to research the practical applications of ionising radiation and radioisotopes and their use with acceptable safety. You should also consider the uses and safe handling of sources of radiation within medicine and scientific research.
Relevant theory must be referenced where appropriate and a references list provided.
Assessment Criteria
1. Explain origins, penetration, energy deposition and measurement of different radiations.
2. Explain the main types of radioactive decay and characteristic radiations.
3. Explain selected uses and safe handling of sources in industry, medicine and scientific research
