The task
As a waste management consultant, you have been asked to review the household waste management strategy of a Local Authority. The CEO of the council is keen to know what is going on in terms of household waste management currently and would like to know about areas where you would recommend alternative approaches to improve performance. Therefore, you must review both high level ambitions and what measures, processes and approaches have been put in place to achieve these. You should also reflect on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to the level and types of waste produced and consider any measures needed to address this, as well as any longterm risks/challenges for waste management for the Local Authority of the pandemic.
You must describe and critically evaluate the household waste management strategy of any Local Authority (but not any within Greater Manchester) in the UK in terms of their approach to meeting national targets. You should include evidenced and justified recommendations to improve waste management performance in your selected Local Authority. Please be explicit in terms of recommendations that relate specifically to the period of living with the COVID-19 pandemic and those which you would target beyond this time.
In order to critically analyse the strategy, you should compare to other authorities or countries or consider alternative approaches suggested by waste management organisations (e.g. WRAP). This may also include horizon scanning for future challenges/opportunities for the Local Authority. Your own logical and reasoned argument can also be presented as critical analysis.
